With this being one of my first Turf Talk’s of 2014, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. We are anxiously waiting for spring to get here so we can start preparing the golf course for a great 2014 golf season!
Until spring does arrive, we are trying to get through our off season work. The bitter cold last week left us penned up inside the shop trying to keep warm. We did get a huge push on our equipment maintenance and we are now about 2 to 3 weeks ahead of where we were last year.
At the end of last week, the temperatures did come up, and we did get to do some work outside. As many of you have probably already noticed, we took down all of the dead Ash trees along the front drive. We are going to replace the Ash trees with two different types of Maples. These trees have already been delivered and are sitting at our shop. Once OUPS (Ohio Utility Protection Services) marks all of the underground utility lines we will begin digging the holes for the new trees. They are scheduled to have all lines marked by the 14th, which is today! If that happens, we will plot out where all the trees will go and hopefully start digging on Thursday the 16th I hope to have all of the trees in the ground by Friday. Once we remove the rest of dead or dying Ash trees on the property, we will rent a stump grinder to remove all of the stumps. We will then clean out the grindings by hand and backfill the holes with fresh topsoil. When spring arrives, we will either seed or sod the stump holes.
