Let it begin!

The 2017 season has officially begun for the maintenance staff.  The crew has been very busy getting the course in shape for the spring.  Despite the recent rainy days, we’ve been out working hard to get this place in the best shape possible.

The crew spent a few days last week edging all of the greenside bunkers.  They look great with a new crisp and clean edge.  We will be getting 25 tons of bunker sand next week to add where needed.  This year we are focusing on detail around the course and the bunker edges are at the top of our list.  We will string edge them often and keep sand from piling up over the sides.   This will help prevent grass from migrating into the sand.

The course came out of winter very healthy.  The unusually warm winter allowed a lot of our rough to grow lush already.  Areas that were slit seeded in the fall have filled in nicely and we’ve been able to mow all of the rough once so far.   We plan to keep our rough healthy with adequate fertilization and the use of pesticides.  Soon we will be treating the rough to prevent crabgrass and insects from doing harm.    Fungicides will be applied on the green’s surrounds to prevent disease from taking out turf.   Greens will continue to be the main focus and we will be following a tight program as always.  I believe last year was a great season for our greens despite the hot weather.  I look forward to even better, healthier, smoother greens this season!

A few large ash trees were removed from #4 tee box.  They were victims of the Emerald Ash Borer.  Removing these dead trees has provided #4 blue/yellow tee with additional morning sunlight.  This tee box will benefit from this as will the safety of our members and guest.  One other tree was removed from the right side of the tee box, an Oak tree.  This tree had started to fall apart and was also a safety hazard.

All the new signage has been installed around the course.  Each hole now has a tee sign and we have added new directional signs to help direct members and guest from hole to hole.
